Another month of cover reveals to share with you all. A few I really like and others not so much.

The Evolution of Mara Dyer
by Michelle Hodkin
The Lost Prince
by Julie Kagawa
The Curiosities
(Anthology)
Greta and The Goblin King
by Chloe Jacobs

Shadow Bound (Unbound #2)
by Rachel Vincent
UK Edition

My favourites here are (1) The Lost Prince, the model isn't what I pictured Ethan as at all but I love the blues and the guy is not bad to look at. Whether I remember correctly or not though I've always pictured Ethan as blonde haired and blue eyed. If I am wrong then well that's my fault. (2) The Curiosities because of the striking colours and (3) The Evolution of Mara Dyer which just has a gorgeous image that follows the first cover beautifully.

What covers are your favourite? Least favourite? If you own the UK Edition of Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent, what are your thoughts on Shadow Bound not matching? Does it bother you? Do you like this cover more or less than the US Edition?

Set in the future, following the social breakdown of the world.

Blank Zero, chapter 1 was a promising start to what I think will be a great manga and I believe that we will see wonderful things in the future from this aspiring manga creator.

I picked up Blank Zero while attending my first anime convention in Tampa, Florida. There, in the artist alley, I found this manga being sold directly by the creator. I was able to get one of the first prints and I also got it signed which is great.

The art of this manga is fantastic and I believe that Vizshua seems to have a good story started here. The chapter for me unfortunately ended too soon because I am really looking forward to the 2nd chapter!

On the weekend of April 13th to the 15th the contributors of WildFire Writing (along with my little sister) all took a trip to the Khaotic Kon anime convention in Tampa, FL. There was fanart, merchandise and lots and lots of cosplay (costume play).

Kitten is the one among us who is never afraid of starting up conversations with strangers or asking them if she can take their picture so despite me actually buying a camera to take pictures I only took one and she took all of the rest with both mine and her own camera. She even remembered to ask if she could post the pictures on the blog while I just said thank-you and ran away.

Here is an aspriring manga creator and his crew. Reeshe bought a copy of chapter one of his manga (in his hand) and got it signed. Keep an eye out for Reeshe's review later today.

The convention did have many panels and events but we only attended one and it didn't impress so we stuck to the Artist Alley and Vendor's Room where we came across some wonderful items.

We also got autographs from Todd Haberkorn who is the voice actor for Ling Yao in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Italy in Hetalia, Watanuki in XXXholic and many other characters. He was very friendly and down to Earth even at 11PM at night after a full day of convention and signings.

In the beginning our first anime convention was a little intimidating but after immersing ourselves in the geekdom it was a nice experience. I think I might try attending a different one next time, one with more interesting panels and with more guests that I am familiar with and I'll bring my little brother along next time, as well as more spending money.

Have you ever been to an anime con before? Tell us about your first experience!

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa is what I would define as a vampire, post-apocalyptic, survival-horror. Set in a world where the human population has been decimated by a plague and the attempts of a cure. Human beings have been reduced to becoming bottom links on a food chain that leads up to soulless vampires and the devolved rapids. There is no democracy, no human Government, and no civil society; what once was has now become a country filled with ghost towns and walled up cities where vampires rule the streets and rapids roam the outer wilderness.

Allison Sekemoto is an unregistered inhabitant of the vampire city New Covington. She, like almost every one of her generation, is an orphan and the only family she has are the boys in her group of invisibles who survive by stealing and foraging for anything that aids in their survival. And however hard life was for Allison and her group before it’s getting harder as food becomes scarcer, winter approaches, and rumors spread of the vampires locking down the city. A problem Allison had miraculously found a solution to, but one that quickly leads to tragedy and Allison dead.

The Immortal Rules is a story starkly different from Julie Kagawa’s The Iron Fey series in both plot and format. Where the protagonist of The Iron King (the first novel in the Iron Fey series) had a clear set objective from the very beginning – save her kidnapped brother, Allison’s story does not have a clear narrative path for the reader to follow, at least not until midway through the book. I had no problem with this for the majority of the novel because I prefer character-centric stories and the story of The Immortal Rules was mainly about Allison – her struggles of balancing what she is with who she was.

“The shadows lengthened like grasping fingers, sliding over the ground.”

Julie Kagawa’s writing style, constantly filled with vivid descriptions, always did a great job with unfolding the mood for a scene or setting, especially when it came to tense moments or action scenes and trust me this is a book brimming with action.

Unfortunately, in spite of all of these highlights I can’t give The Immortal Rules a perfect rating because despite me loving Allison’s character and being intrigued by her vampire mentor Kanin I couldn’t connect or care about the other characters in the story. To me they were all mainly just there to fill a role so when it came to moments that should have gained reactions out of me I was just reading quickly to move onto the next scene despite how engrossing the current one should be.

So overall, if you want an action-packed novel about a strong, kick-ass heroine then pick up The Immortal Rules but don’t except to fall in love with the ensemble of characters or to shed a tear over them.

While perusing a book store in the US Reeshe and Kitten texted me titles of book covers that caught their eye. Since these books are now published their covers were revealed a while ago but it's never too late to appreciate an eye-catching cover.

Crossed
by Ally Condie
Unleashed
by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie
Frost
by Marianna Bear
As I Wake
by Elizabeth Scott

Relic Master
by Catherine Fisher
Starters
by Lissa Price

When I first read the text I only remembered seeing the covers for Unleashed and Crossed but actually after looking up all of the titles I have seen all of these covers before. My favourites would have to be Frost, Unleashed, and As I Wake which I think are all beautiful and slightly haunting. Well Frost is more than slightly.

What are your thoughts on the covers? Would any of these covers have you noting down the titles, like it had Reeshe and Kitten doing, if you came across them in the bookstore?

Written by Sarah Rees Brennan The Demon's Lexicon is a YA, paranormal, trilogy set in England and centred around two brothers - Alan and Nick Ryves.

A series that definitely sets itself a part from the typical YA layout, The Demon's Lexicon is a trilogy filled with darkness, wit, secrets, lies and magic. Sarah Rees Brennan is an adept when it comes to writing characters and relationships, and when I say relationships I don't mean the romantic kind. The relationships I am talking about are the familial kind, between siblings and parents, and also the relationship between friends and people who are not quite friends.

Each novel takes place from three different points of views and with each book it clearly emphasizes how much a perspective can affect how the reader will view a particular character because no one character has the exact same kind of relationship with more than one person. Seeing characters from different perspectives throughout the same book not only gives greater insight to the main POV but it also reveals the different layers and sides to characters we thought we already knew.

I couldn't think of the words to write a proper review for each book, but after completing the final instalment in this series I wanted to let everyone know my overall thoughts. If you are looking for a YA series to surprise you with twists, entertain you with sharp dialogue, and immerse you in a world filled with danger and action, give the first book in this series a try because you won't regret it.

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults.

Release Date: September 27th, 2012

For more information check-out the article here on The Wall Street Journal.

So I think it's still a bit early for certainties but we definitely have more information then the last announcement on J.K.'s upcoming adult book. Last time people were saying that the book might be a crime-novel, does anyone still think that? If not what are your guesses?

The first book I ever read by Melissa Marr was discovered on the book shelf of my university's Barnes & Noble. I noticed the title first Wicked Lovely as the book was placed spine out and picked it up. My first thought was that the cover was gorgeous, which made me instantly weary because I didn't want to buy the book just because I thought the cover was pretty. I read the synopsis and was interested but still wasn't sure if I was being objective and placed the book down. The next time I returned to the store I picked up Wicked Lovely, read the first chapter, and bought the book.

Melissa Marr is one of my favourite authors because she writes books about complex characters set in modern day times that are enshrouded in worlds steeped in legend and folklore. Her Wicked Lovely series is about faeries that could be over nine hundred years old but don’t feel any less real then my friends and family because like us they have motivations, fears, desires and goals. They have pasts that shape them. Her Graveminder novel is about inhabitants of a town where certain rituals must take place or the dead won’t stay buried but what connects the reader to the story are the characters that tell it. Characters who have been thrust into roles they may not want to play but are the only ones who can.

Along with publishing novels Melissa has also published the manga series Desert Tales and has been published in several anthologies such as Teeth, Love is Hell, and Enthralled which she co-edited with Kelley Armstrong. Her latest YA novel Carnival of Souls will be released September 4th. From the information released so far this story sounds like it's going to be another fantastic world filled with an intriguing ensemble of characters.

Melissa Marr grew up believing in faeries, ghosts, and various other creatures. After teaching college literature for a decade, she applied her fascination with folklore to writing. Wicked Lovely was her first novel. Currently, Marr lives in the Washington, D.C., area, writes full-time, and still believes in faeries and ghosts.

Friday 20 April 2012

This past weekend I was away on vacation and before returning home I stopped by Kitten's mom's place to pick up a few things I had mailed there.

Lips Touch Three Times and Daughter of Smoke and Bone (UK) by Laini Taylor | Saltwater Vampires by Kirsty Eagar | Sweetly by Jackson Pearce | Night Circus (UK) by Erin Morgenstern | Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey | Dark Heart Forever by Lee Monroe| The Cursed Ones (UK) by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie | Darklight by Lesley Livingston | The Demon's Surrender (UK) by Sarah Rees Brennan | Hammered and Hexed by Kevin Hearne | Ghost Hunt 4 and 5 by Shiho Inada | Shinobi Life 4 and 5 by Shoko Conami

Along with the books there was a book cover from Hide-a-Cover and 50 personalized bookplates from Bookplate Ink.

All of the above items were bought by me. All of the books were ordered from Book Depository except for Saltwater Vampires which was bought from FishPond World. Both websites offer free INTERNATIONAL shipping for books, book depository has better prices but for certain titles they tend to run out of stock after that I go looking for them at FishPondWorld which sells the UK, Australian and New Zealand editions of books. BD sells all of same editions including US and other language editions as well.

Any idea which book I should read first?

Hello readers. The contributors of WildFire Writing will be taking a short break until the end of next week. This does not mean that there will be no posts until then but it does mean that posts will be more sparse.

Reeshe and Kitten are currently on vacation and I am sick so I hope you understand if its a little quiet around here for the next two weeks.

Ciao!

Book Blogger Confessions is a new bi-weekly meme hosted by Tiger @ All Consuming Books and Karen @ For What it's Worth Reviews.

Review/Guest post requests: Do you have a review request policy? Has it changed over time? How do you handle requests that don’t meet your criteria?
In the past, what types of "pitches" have caught your attention? Are there any (non-specific) examples of requests that are off-putting to you as a blogger?

Here on WildFire Writing we don't have a review request policy, yet. We're still fairly new and considering the amount of books we have to read I don't think we have time to take requests for the moment so that's probably a good thing.

Over at Scribing Shadows I have a policy and currently it says that I am not taking any requests, the blog is on a break and before then I had no time to even look at email requests so that's why I made the decision to not take requests. From the first time I posted my policy over there to now it has changed every so often and it would always be me limiting the kind of genres I would accept, because although I did read all the genres I had stated in the beginning I was a lot pickier with what I would read from certain genres than others.

I don't like pitches or I don't buy pitches. All the requests I would get would be from authors so of course they are going to try and make their book sound as appealing to me as possible. I also hate when books are compared to a popular book series, it puts me off. What I like is a polite greeting, some indication that you've looked at my blog and understand the content I mainly cover and you're book cover, along with the synopsis and publisher. Also, don't send me the attachment or download link to your book in the initial email because I haven't accepted it yet. It just makes me feel worse if I decide I'm not interested.

Wednesday 11 April 2012

I am surprised I haven't noticed any of this in my blogger dashboard especially since the information was posted on the YenPress website April 8th. Did I just miss everyone's posts or has no one else seen the news about this yet?

Coming in 2013, an original adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s bestselling BEAUTIFUL CREATURES!

For the past few months, Ethan Wate has been plagued with vivid, terrifying dreams—a mysterious girl cries out for his help, but as he reaches for her, she slips through his fingers and plunges into darkness. The dreams are unsettling, but awake, life in his small Southern town is the same-old news…until the new girl comes to town. And she looks almost…familiar…even though this tiny town has never seen the likes of a girl like Lena Duchannes…

Talented newcomer Cassandra Jean will be illustrating this dark romantic fantasy, which will be serializing in YEN PLUS magazine online later this year. - YenPress

I've only read the first book for the Caster Chronicle Series so far but I enjoyed it and I love manga so having YA being adapted into manga is always cause for celebration in my opinion.

What are your thoughts about this? Do you care that another popular YA novel is being adapted into a graphic novel? Like the idea? Hate the idea? Share your thoughts!

For today's cover post we have two recently revealed covers about two books with their own dark twists on the Lewis Caroll classic - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Splintered by A.G Howard

Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter

I can't say that I am drooling over either of these covers but I have to say they are both very eye catching. If I saw either cover on a book store shelf I would pause to pick it up and check it out, which is what a good book cover is supposed to do even if I am not falling in love with it. I love the colours for Splintered and the little details surrounding the model's face like the butterfly and the bird. And what I like most about the Alice in Zombieland cover is that the border makes the book like a playing card which I think ties quite nicely into the original Alice story.

If you want to learn more about the books then click on the covers and be taken to their goodreads pages.

Graveminder by Melissa Marr

Rebekkah Barrow never forgot the tender attention her grandmother, Maylene, bestowed upon the dead of Claysville. While growing up, Rebekkah watched as Maylene performed the same unusual ritual at every funeral: three sips from a small silver flask followed by the words, "Sleep well, and stay where I put you."

Now Maylene is gone and Bek must return to the hometown--and the man--she abandoned a decade ago, only to discover that Maylene's death was not natural . . . and there was good reason for her odd traditions. In Claysville, the worlds of the living and the dead are dangerously connected--and beneath the town lies a shadowy, lawless land ruled by the enigmatic Charles, aka Mr. D. From this dark place the deceased will return if their graves are not properly minded. And only the Graveminder, a Barrow woman, and the current Undertaker, Byron, can set things to right once the dead begin to walk.

I found Graveminder to be very good. At first it was a bit slow and I had put the book down for a while. But with some persuasion from Sandy; I picked it back up, and couldn't put it back down. The story was very original and exciting, I have never read a story like before, I feel like the story was kind of left unfinished but at the same time I am very happy with the ending.

I have to say they were a few parts that I find kind of scary and annoying, but they were very few and it helps you see the big picture on things! I'm actually hoping there is a second part to this.

Unafraid by Michael Griffo

The boarding school known as Archangel Academy possesses a legacy of secrets known only to a privileged few. For in this peaceful, charming part of England lives a population of vampires at war with one another--and Michael Howard is caught in the middle of it all. . .

When Michael left his small Nebraska home town to enroll at Archangel Academy, he couldn't have imagined how much the experience would change him. Once mortal, Michael is now a vampire with a destiny that was foretold long ago, and a group of friends with their own mysterious abilities.

But there are enemies too, some of them hiding in plain sight. Being strong enough to defend himself isn't enough. Michael must find a way to protect his entire race of vampires. Dark forces within the school will drive everyone to take sides in the escalating violence. And for all his new powers, Michael will discover that love, jealousy, and vengeance have a danger all their own. . .

I am glad to see that people might actually be happy in this book, rather than ending up dead. The struggles were very different because it is not about Micheal, but about his boyfriend Ronon. He has to fight with a demon he buried deep in his soul for so long. A pain that could destroy everything he has become from that very special day, that he had to lock it away and hid it.

Also Ronon's mother has finally given into love again, and the person she is with may actually turn out to love her back. In the beginning her children find faults with this man, but who could blame them. You actually get to see her show emotion, shedding some of the hardness.

This book i think was just as good as the other two, it always has twists and turns to keep you right where the author wants you...I was not disappointed at all. I am still wondering what will happen from here, if there is to be a 4th book, and what is this really special connection that Micheal has to the well.

I love it so I am hoping there will be another very soon.

Above by Leah Bobet
Draykon by Charlotte E. English
Auracle by Gina Rosati
Sweet Shadows (Medusa Girls #2) by Tera Lynn Childs

I am too lazy this time around to check when all of the above covers were revealed but I know Draykon came out in 2010, Sweet Shadows was revealed back in January (where was the blogosvere mania for that one? Sweet Venom certainly got more attention last year) and will be released in September. As for the others I leave that to google if you're really curious about them and will only say I think they are very pretty.

It took a bit of searching to find this round of covers. Only Water and Willful Impropriety appeared casually in my dashboard.

Grasping at Eternity by Karen Amanda Hooper
Water by Shauna Granger
Willful Impropriety:
13 Tales of Society, Scandal and Romance
(Anthology)
Lonely Souls by Karice Bolton

Quicksilver (Ultraviolet #2)
by R.J. Anderson

I think my two favourite covers here are the ones that found me (Water and Willful). I love the image and style of The Lonely Souls cover but I think it would have benefited from stronger contrasts and better text placement.

What cover is your fav? Are the other newly released covers that have caught your fancy? Share them!
